Architectural Photography of the Summer Theatre in Szczecin
In July 2022, the London-based architectural studio Flanagan Lawrence commissioned me to produce an architectural photography series of the Summer Theatre in Szczecin. The project was realised on the basis of a competition-winning design from 2015 and represents a contemporary reinterpretation of a historic open-air theatre. The new architectural form reorganises the public space and restores a strong cultural function to the site, while remaining closely connected to the surrounding landscape. The design is based on a clear horizontal composition, in which the lightweight roof structure plays a key functional and visual role. I began the photo shoot at sunrise. My goal was to capture the eastern façade illuminated by the early morning light, as well as the sun rays entering the covered auditorium. It was particularly important for me to accurately show the structure of the roof, which becomes most visible in low-angle light, especially in aerial drone photographs taken at sunrise and sunset.
Architecture in the Context of Kasprowicz Park
The Summer Theatre has always been an important compositional element of Kasprowicz Park, both before and after its redevelopment. I wanted this relationship to be clearly present in the photographic narrative. For this reason, alongside close-up views, I also created images from a greater distance, showing how the building relates to its natural surroundings and the green landscape of the park. In the evening, a sudden storm passed over Szczecin. Despite the challenging conditions, I decided to continue the shoot and create night-time photographs of the theatre. Although it was not easy, the weather allowed me to achieve a distinctive and atmospheric result after dark.
Publications and Reception
Photographs from the session were published, among others, on the cover and in the Polish architecture magazine Architektura Murator, as well as in the international architecture magazine The Plan.
